There are times when I despise what I am. Not personally, but that I am part of humanity.
For taking the gift that is REASONING, and somehow managing to completely F it up.
Reasoning, the intellectuals will say, has given us domination over the earth, civilization, technology, literature, the arts, improved health, longer lives…
And I say, BULLSHIT.
Are we happy? Are YOU happy? Are you grateful for each sunrise?
Or do you curse Mondays, hate your job, tolerate your kids, feel unappreciated, caught in a trap, financially strapped, and empty inside?
Has the technology, civilization, control of nature, arts, literature, and medical wonders made you a happier person? Given you a more fulfilled life? Helped you appreciate each sunrise?
I think not.
Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT blaming technology or civilization – I LOVE THEM – they are not the problem, but they are also not the solution.
One human brain – ONE. A Single brain from any person on the planet, is more capable and has millions more interconnections than the most powerful supercomputer ever built. There are 6 BILLION of us, 6 billion super computer brains – all alive at the same time, and somehow we can’t figure out the simplest of problems.
How to be happy.
We run around each day – tense. We are truly tense little beings. We spend almost all of our time regretting the past (what we did, or what happened to us) and/or worrying about the future (what will I do, how will I retire, bills, rent, etc. etc. etc.). We spend the least amount of time in this short life enjoying, engaging, and appreciating – even though our brilliant reasoning brains know that it is IN THESE MOMENTS when we are happiest.
Did we, somewhere in our evolutionary progress, exchange reason for happiness?
Have you ever wished you were your pet? You know – your cat or dog that lives in the lap of luxury, happily, joyfully purring in your lap? I know I have. How great would it be to be loved, cared for, tended to, cleaned up after, and at the end of your life, humanely put down? THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.
You might say, well, it’s only because of us – the higher reasoning ones – that they even get this life. Were it not for us they might be starving and suffering, and that’s true. It would be horrible to be a starving animal, or – a starving human, of which there are 10 times more of than starving animals.
Are we are truly higher on the evolutionary ladder? Maybe we are simply an out of control variant, a defect or a cancer.
Would you trade reasoned suffering for ignorant happiness? It’s something to think about – along with the bills…
