I read them all, because it’s kind of a boring drive.
Some proclaim their allegiance to political party left, some proclaim their allegiance to political party right, some proclaim their allegiance to the middle, some support God, some support evolution, some support hate, some support hope and love.
I have two stickers on my car, and both say “woof”, because the only thing I’m certain of is that I love my dogs.
In some ways I am envious of those who are so certain of their convictions, so certain that they are right, that they are willing to announce it to the world. So willing to be labeled – and to self-label – so convinced (right left or middle) that they are right, that they are willing to let the world believe that the camp they are in is the only camp that is legitimate.
I am envious – and I’m not being sarcastic – or saying these words tongue-in-cheek. I mean it.
I have never been certain that I am right, I’ve never been certain about anything. I think my positions have value, and I will be happy to share my thoughts with you, and to discuss the complexity that is life, and I am excited to hear your views – even if you think that they are not the same as mine – because I’m not certain…
I may lean this way – or that way, but if you make a convincing argument, I am willing (and able) to consider that your beliefs have just as much value as mine do, and are just as worthy of consideration as mine are.
Let’s talk – because isn’t that what reasonable people do?
Don’t label me as a republican or a democrat, as a liberal or a conservative, talk to me instead… Find out who I am, what I care about, what makes me laugh and cry.
The only thing I’m comfortable with being labeled as is a dog lover, and if you have issues with that – well – then you’re dead to me.
