Gratitude – the inner state of thankfulness - is a gateway to inner happiness.
This, small but obvious fact, we have learned from research, experience, and practice.
Many experts profess its benefits and have written about it extensively (including me, although I do not profess to be an expert).
The act, or effort, or intent of gratitude is a reward in and of itself. It doesn’t require you to do or be anyone or anything other than who you already are – it is, in essence, a reward unto itself.
It doesn’t come without effort, however, as it requires your attention, your notice, your awareness.
It requires you to pay attention, to notice, and to acknowledge the small and the great - the persistence of the dandelion that pushed its way through four inches of concrete and the kindness of 7-11 cashier.
This simple act of FEELING grateful for what you have and even for simply what is, can change not only your perspective on life, but also its outcome in relation to you.
So, if you feel gratitude for both the dandelion and the 7-11 cashier, and/or your boss, subordinate, husband, wife, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, (ok, maybe not your boss) brother, sister, friend, or barista… then let me help you supercharge your gratitude (and ultimately your happiness) by suggesting you do this one, painfully simple thing…
TELL THEM
Don’t just say “thank you”.
Don’t assume your “tip” is your gratitude.
Don’t think, “they get it”.
Say the words.
Say “I’m grateful for your service”.
Say “I’m grateful for your presence”.
Say “I’m grateful that you’re in my life”.
Say “I’m grateful for our friendship”.
Use the words…
There is no better sentiment in the world than to know that someone is grateful for you.
You will be rewarded tenfold – but that’s not the reason to do it or say it. Say it because you MEAN IT.
Even to those closest to you, those who know you love them, because they probably need it most.
Take a moment of time, a moment out of your life, a moment… to say:
Thank you, I am grateful for all that you do, and for all that you mean to me, and my life is better because of you. I appreciate all that you do and who you are.
You ARE that person, but until, or unless you say it OUT LOUD, no one knows…
The impact you will have by saying these few words will amaze you.
Try it, and let me know how it goes...
